Lava Lamps

First Class Experiments

First Class have been busy investigating materials. They even designed and made their very own lava lamps using just bottles, oil, water, food colouring and Alka-Selter tablets!!! We discovered oil and water do not mix and water always settles on top. When we added a few drops of food colouring it dissolved in the water but not the oil. The Alker-Selker tablets caused an eruption and so we had our very own lava lamps. Maybe the kids would like to show you at home. Here's a few snaps of our very our little scientists carrying out some investigations.....

Super Scientists!!

First Class have been working hard at Science experiments!!

We were investigating forces and materials.

We made rice crispy buns and toast to investigate the effect that heat has on bread and chocolate.

We were also figuring out what material would be best to keep ice pops cool! We let ice cubes melt in different materials to see what would melt the fastest and which material was best for keeping them cool. We made sure each ice cube was the same size so we could take a fair test. It took a long time for the ice cubes to melt so we took turns to guard the ice cubes!

First Class - Green Flag Project

As most of you may know, our school is trying to earn a Green Flag. To earn this, we need to be very responsible with our rubbish and litter.

This month, some children from Mr. McMahon's class made a litter map of the school grounds. They put a red dot on the map where they spotted any litter and a green dot where they spotted any bins.

What we found was that there was a lot of rubbish being thrown on the ground and in the bushes and grass around the school.

Our next task will be to make a plan of how we will fix this problem.

Here are some pictures of the children hard at work.

First Class Science Event

On Monday April 11th our first classes held a science event. We invited parents and teachers to see first class show off all the interesting things that they have done in science this year.
